Background:
TEE has become one of the most reliable tools in diagnosis of
aortic dissection and in some cases it showed more reliable findings
than computed tomography (CT),magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
and aortography. The aim was to show the advantage of multiplane
TEE vs. other diagnostic methods in our 12 patients. Material
and methods: In 12 patients with suspected aortic dissection multiplane
TEE was performed. In 6 (50%) patients the diagnosis of aortic
dissection was confirmed (4-acute aortic dissection and 2-chronic
aortic dissection). In the remaining 6 patients without dissection,
4 (33%) had aortic aneurysm and 2 (17%) had neither dissection
nor aneurysm.CT found dissection in 4 patients with aortic dissection, aortography
was performed in 3 patients. 4 patients with aortic dissection
were operated and the diagnosis was confirmed in all. Conclusion:
In our cases multiplane TEE has proved to be more sensitive and
reliable diagnostic tool in comparison with other imaging techniques
and should be considered first in the evaluation of suspected
aortic dissection.
