In this study we evaluated the relation between hypertension (HTA) and echocardiography findings of myocardial hypertrophy (HLV) in patients receiving very poor antihypertension treatment. We also wanted to compare our results with those of developed countries. A group of one hundred patients with hypertension (mainly refugees), was selected (classified by sex and stages according to the 6th Report of JNC on Prevention, Detection, Evaluation and Treatment of High Blood Pressure (JNC VI) and another, control group with no HTA, all age patients ageing between 50 and 70. Methods: Echocardiography was performed in both groups, where LV wall thickness (LVPW and IVS) was measured. The results were analysed in the form of Chi-square and percentages. Results: hypertrophy was found in 88% (LVPW) i.e. 89% (IVS) in tests, and in 10% (LVPW) i.e. 15% (IVS) in controls. In both variables there was no significant difference between Stage 1 HTA and control group, neither was there any difference between Stage II and Stage III HTA, but there was a significant difference between Control group and Stage 1 HTA on one side, and Stage II and Stage III HTA on the other side (p<0,05). Conclusion: The data from this study show significant myocardial hypertrophy in HTA group, particularly in the Stage II and III. There was clear difference between our results concerning HLV and data derived from the literature (reported 32-46%). It seems that bad social conditions, war stress and poor treatment compliance influence these results. On the contrary, ratios between variables (IVS and LVPW) in each particular stage of HTA are similar with those in the literature.
