COMPREHENSIVE MODEL OF TREATMENT OF ALCOHOL INDUCED DISORDERS

Zagreb Alcohology School, based on the tradition of Hudolin's treatment model, comprises measures of primary; secondary and tertiary prevention of alcohol induced disorders and develops institutional as well as non-institutional models of treatment.
In collaboration with the Croatian National Institute of Public Health and Offices of local governments, primary prevention of alcohol induced disorders is carried out throughout the entire school education, especially in the fifth and sixth grade of elementary school.
Institutional models of treatment are adapted to the county's organization of psychiatric service. So, clinical centers have, besides in-patient programs, partial programs as well which comprise daily hospitals, weekend hospitals, family out-patient treatments, counseling centers for alcohol induced disorders, and consultation-liaison services. In line with the modification of the Minnesota Model, a rehabilitation program of treatment has been assured through a wide network of clubs of treated alcoholics. Currently, there are more than 200 clubs in Croatia.
In smaller county centers the treatment is based on wards of partial hospitalization (daily hospitals, out-patient family therapy) which collaborate with the network of clubs of treated alcoholics.
The Department of Psychiatry of the University Hospital "Sestre milosrdnice" is the Reference Center for alcoholism of the Croatian Ministry of Health and is responsible for the development of treatment systems, supervision and evaluation of programs and projects. Also, the Croatian Association of clubs of treated alcoholism is a non-governmental association which, in collaboration with the Department, organizes, supervises and evaluates the system of rehabilitation of alcohol addicts.
